MODERN TIMES, a shop specialising in 20th century design homewares and furniture. It's filled with beautiful, quality pieces sourced and selected by Thomas Kleibrink, a man who grew up in a 500 year old house in Germany filled with family heirlooms. "My grandfather filled it with treasures, and this inspired my passion for antiques and vintage homewares." It's a varied and interesting collection of items, passionately sourced, and I for one found it extremely inspiring. Milagros are small, metallic votive offerings that Mexicans pin to images of the Virgin of Guadalupe and the saints. A fisherman may pin a silver fish to the cloak of a particular Saint and pray for a good catch. Milagros translates from the Spanish as Miracles. Who wouldn't like a miracle or two! Milagros works with independent makers and small workshops to create quality hand made products, combining traditional techniques and contemporary design. All products are sourced in Mexico. Recent projects include glassware for Wahaca, tiles for Jamie's Italian, and Las Iguanas. Baskets for Mama Shelter in Marseille, Istanbal and Wahaca. The shop is a colourful haven of unique pieces, full of intrigue and expression. We exist to showcase & celebrate cutting-edge contemporary art from across the globe." "The Unit London is a brand that believes everyone should be able to experience and enjoy exciting art from all around the world. As artists ourselves, we founded the gallery on the fundamental principle of talent and ability. In an industry so often governed by commercial viability, back stories and nepotism, we proudly stand by our commitment to nay showcase work that we genuinely beige in and nothing else"…"The Unit London is a collective that brings together artists, collectors, first-timers and enthusiasts in a way that is indiscriminate and authentic. The “U” in our name is emblematic of our ethos of putting people at the heart of our gallery experience." The Guardian - Sept 2014 Loved it. The art. The space. The content. The quotations written on the walls (my favs written below). I felt all this even before I read the Guardian article. It's a space that holds you. Quite simply you don't want to leave. 'Wrath is a beast that seizes the mind' 'All-devouring and insane, Envy sacrifices creation and basks in the Vast Emptiness of its destruction' 'In the selfish pursuit of orgasm, no one can be trusted. Is the red of Lust a shade of passion, or a shade of blood' THE UNIT / 7 Earlham Street, Seven Dials, London / +44 7946 221 476 - +44 7813 050 203 / www.theunit.com Images: ℅ The Unit website Character, temptation, and culinary inspiration to the extreme is Lina Stores. A traditional Italian food store full of charm, and filled to the brim with Italian goodies; pretty much every thing you could possibly desire or want to discover. I spoke to a couple of the staff both animated young Italians, very proud of their shop and its contents "We'll have an online store later this month" they both told me independently with great enthusiasm. I asked if everything was Italian and was taken through the whole shop and shown the 2 things that weren't…chorizo sausage and the second? Sorry I've forgotten the second, too busy being enchanted by the space and culinary possibilities and got distracted. I walked out of there with a little selection of antipasti and it was deeeelicious! So the excitement here is about Suzanne Hof the owner, in-house jeweller and curator of Locals. She "loves ideas, atmosphere, colors and shapes" this is the motivation for her jewellery, and also the motivation for Locals her shop right in the heart of Amsterdam, on the way to the Nine Streets. She stocks her jewellery brand Sugarz, and the works of other local designers only. Dutch product, locally made, locally sourced, locally sold. Nice!
