The glass staircase at the Apple Store in the Hirsch Building in Amsterdam.  A fabulous thing. Solid, functional, robust, yet whimsical all at the same time. The whole store fit out is a little bit fabulous . The blend of traditional and contemporary styles. The space. Simplicity. Order. Grand yet simple. It is all these things. An impressive space to visit.

RUBELLI - Venice

How about we go back to Venice today?

I went to Rubelli, and just thinking about it makes me smile. The host of my cute little loft apartment in Padua recommended I go there. How did she know me so well after such a short meeting?

Rubelli was founded in 1858 and produces hand-made fabrics using traditional techniques as well as highly sophisticated textiles.

I rang the head office because I couldn't locate it on google maps. I was given the address, and so my journey began. The water taxi dropped me off on a small jetty opposite the huge emerald double doors. I rang the bell. "Do you have an appointment" "No head office gave me the address, and said to arrive in the afternoon" "Ok come in" I walked through, and a small face popped out of the little window and asked me why I was here in Italian. I started speaking in English and she just ushered me on. I walked through a stunning, huge formal entrance and down a huge corridor and up to the first floor. I felt like Dorothy going to see the Wizard of Oz. I was greeted at the door and guided to the showroom. It was enormous and I was all alone. It was overwhelming. The historical building with its gilded doors, huge windows looking out to the grand canal, 12ft ceilings, and THOSE FABRICS! Truly stunning. Such opulence. Unique, luscious, stunning, artisan…art. I touched each one and there were easily hundreds.

BORD BAR

I discovered Bord Bar in an interior design showroom in Luxembourg. Three happy, colourful trolleys all lined up looking very much like the ones from an airplane, yet one was a bar, one was a filing cabinet and the other was a storage unit.

I went inside to discover more, but my lack Luxembourgish and her lack of english didn't get me very far. I did a little googling and discovered that these interesting pieces are actually designed and made in Germany. In the range they have these authentic transformed airplane trolleys, boxes and cubes. There are many designs and functions to choose from.

    AUTHOR

Thinking about all I've written and said about Jayne Reid.

I'm writing this because she's going far away,
So something profound I want to say,
So Jayne Reid if I may,
You are the only person I know, who has truly "lived her life her way."

In spite of the highest highs, and lowest lows,
Onward and forever upward she goes,
    How far nobody knows!
